Does Momento store a copy of photos and videos?
Since v3.1 Momento stores a copy of each photo and video you manually add to Momento from your device along with thumbnails optimised for display throughout the app.
Momento does not store a copy of photos or videos from feeds. These are referenced from their original source on demand.
What happens to photos and videos that were previously referenced?
Prior to version 3.1 Momento referenced photos from your photo library rather than holding a copy of the photo. Whilst efficient this relied on the photos always being available in your photo library. All photos and videos which were originally referenced will be copied to Momento automatically when upgrading to Momento 3.1 or later.
Photos imported from Momento Classic were stored so both Momento Classic and Momento 3 could access them. As of Momento 3.1 these photos will be automatically copied to Momento 3.
What resolution does Momento store my photos and videos at?
Photos are stored at full resolution — i.e. their original resolution. Videos are stored at their original resolution up to a maximum of 1080p. Any videos exceeding 1080p will be downscaled.
What if there isn't enough storage available?
Momento will reference the image from your photo library temporarily until the necessary storage is available. You will be notified by iOS that your device is running low on storage and Momento will report that saving the image was unsuccessful. Momento will automatically re-attempt to copy the image peridocially. If the photo is removed from your photo library during this time it won't get copied into Momento.
We understand that Momento can start to use a lot of storage if you save a lot of photos, so we are looking at options to reduce storage on your device for the future.
How do I know if Momento is saving an image?
When Momento is saving images it will report 'Saving media...' in the activity status in the navigation bar on the 'Timeline'.
Do you plan to provide referencing photos as an option?
No, for technical reasons we have chosen to store media items separately from the photo library. We understand that Momento can start to use a lot of storage if you save a lot of photos so we are looking at options to reduce storage on your device for the future.
Troubleshooting
If you recieve an error after adding a photo or video to Momento this could be for a number of reasons:
- Image unavailable – Momento was unable to access the original photo or video file. This could be becuase the original file has been deleted or was in use.
- iCloud Photo Library error – If you have iCloud Photo Library enabled then there may have been an error retrieving the original image from iCloud. As a test, see if you can access the item in the Photos app.
When an error occurs Momento will reference the image from your photo library (if it's available) temporarily and periodically attempt to copy the image. If the original image has been deleted then we recommend deleting the image from Momento to stop the error from re-occuring.
